McElduff to meet NUJ over UTV cuts
Sinn Fein MLA Barry McElduff will be meeting today with the NUJ as Chair of the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee. The meeting will be dealing with the issues surrounding planned UTV cuts to local news and programming jobs and scheduling.
Speaking ahead of the meeting Mr McElduff:
"NUJ have asked the Culture , Arts and Leisure committee to table as an emergency item at the next CAL meeting the proposed cuts in service and scheduling by UTV in their local news team. As the Chair of this committee I will be meeting the NUJ today to discuss the issue. I will be joined by deputy chair David McNarry MLA.
"The granting of permission by OFCOM to UTV to cut local services is a huge concern and will decimate local news coverage and ultimately the people behind the reporting of local issues. NUJ are calling for UTV management to put any proposed job cuts on hold and engage in negotiations with the union.
"Over all I would like to see is the safeguarding, promotion and development of local programming.
"The CAL committee will be meeting with UTV and OFCOM in the near future and will undoubtedly be raising our concerns. I'm quite sure that all Assembly members present will be calling for assurances that regarding the employment of staff within UTV."
