Ó Snodaigh condemns decision to axe funding for agency tackling racism

23 October, 2008 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin Equality Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has condemned the Government decision to axe funding to the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI).

Speaking today he said, "The budget decision to axe funding to the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism is hugely regrettable. It will result in the loss of an expert agency which conducts important work on racism and interculturalism at a time when Irish society has never been more diverse.

"Cases coming before the Equality Tribunal and Garda statistics on the higher victimisation rates amongst ethnic minorities all demonstrate that much more work remains to be done in terms of tackling racism.

"The loss of the NCCRI means that primary responsibility for promoting interculuralism and tackling racism in Ireland will now rest with Conor Lenihan Junior Minister for Integration - a Minister who so far has failed to deliver any concrete action." ENDS
