Ruane – Growing demand for Irish medium pre-schooling
Sinn Féin Education Minister Caitríona Ruane spoke of the growing demand for Irish medium pre-schooling at Naíscoil na mBeann in Kilkeel.
The minister commented:
"It is generally accepted that the first few years of a child's life are critical to his or her future development and well-being. During those early months and years, a high percentage of children's learning takes place: attitudes are formed; concepts are developed; and the foundation for all later skills and learning is laid. The opening of Naíscoil na mBeann here in Kilkeel demonstrates that there are a growing number of parents who want their children's pre-school education to be through the medium of Irish.
"Recently I launched the Review of Irish Medium Education for consultation. This review will help inform future policy and strategy for the Irish Medium sector. I would encourage everyone to read it and let the Department and I know their comments. Through a planned strategic approach we can ensure that the Irish Medium sector continues to grow and ensure that our children receive the same high standard of education across all sectors.
"I would like to commend the hard work of Éamonn Rodgers and the rest of the committee in realising this new nursery unit. I would also like to thank Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta and Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta for their support with this project. It is through their hard work and commitment and others like them that Irish Medium Education is flourishing." RNDS
