de Brún to raise FWMS and support for diary industry with Fischer Boel
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún along with a number of other Irish MEP's will meet with senior officials from EU Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel's office in Brussels on Wednesday of this week (29th October).
The issues Ms de Brún will raise include the payments scheme regarding work to implement the nitrates directive and the need for greater support for the milk industry given the disastrous drop in farmgate price.
Ms de Brún said:
"Along with other Irish MEPs I will be putting the case for the need for flexibility to be built into the payment system in terms of the deadline for completion of work already started by farmers in respect of the Farm Waste Management Scheme.
"This summer's inclement weather was the worst on record for a large number of years which raised issues about being able to spread slurry and issues of machinery getting bogged down on farmland in different areas across the north.
"I will also raise the plight of dairy farmers following the price per litre at last week's milk auction, down 7p on last month and significantly lower than the 32.39p per litre last October. This represents a collapse in the farmgate price.
"Prices at this level mean that it is costing more to produce the milk than they are able to get at auction. Clearly this is not sustainable.
"It is vital that we all work together to persuade the European Commission to respond positively. I will be raising these issues at this week's meeting with senior officials from Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel's office." ENDS
