"Gaeltacht funding must be retained" - Brolly

Sinn Féin's Irish Language spokesperson Francie Brolly MLA has said that the Irish Government must be pressurised into keeping the subsidy that allows students to attend Gaeltacht summer courses every year.

Mr Brolly said,

"For generations many students learning Irish have attended An Ghaeltacht each summer to experience at first hand living in an environment where Irish is the primary language.

"The annual summer school is usually the first time that many students have been away from their families and provides a wonderful experience of independence in a learning and enjoyable environment.

"Many of these students have benefited not only from learning their own language but have also built up life long friendships with people from all across Ireland.

"It is important that the grant that allows scholars to attend at an affordable price is maintained. The Irish Government have given a commitment that Gaelic would be promoted across the island yet one of the first areas to be cut is this grant.

"Sinn Féin will be raising the matter in order that this grant is maintained and that the yearly exodus of students to the Gaeltacht areas is maintained." CRÍOCH
