Benefits of breast feeding cannot be ignored - Michelle Gildernew

3 November, 2008

Sinn Féin Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle Gildernew MP MLA
today gave her support for the launch by the Health Promotion Agency of a new DVD to help support pregnant women with breastfeeding.

Speaking at today's launch Ms Gildernew said:

"Breast feeding has been shown by numerous studies to be the healthier option for both mother and baby. Breastfeeding protects babies and their mothers against a wide range of illnesses including respiratory and urinary tract infections, allergies, sudden infant death syndrome and childhood leukaemia.

"On top of this mothers who breast feed have been shown to be at lower risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

"The benefits cannot be ignored. The launch of today's DVD "From bump to breastfeeding - following real mothers' stories to find out how" is great news for expecting and new mothers.

"The DVD will go someway to helping mothers with breast feeding while also challenging stigmas or stereotypes that surround breast feeding.

"I have been an advocate for breast feeding from the birth of my first child. From my experiences and the clear health benefits for those who breast feed I would encourage all mothers to access this DVD."
