Church leaders intervention helpful - O’Dowd

5 November, 2008 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Fein MLA and spokesperson on Education has stated that the intervention by the church leaders on the selection process is helpful intervention.

Speaking today Mr O'Dowd said:

"This is a helpful intervention by the Church leaders.

"I hope that it encourages all involved to find a consensus as that is clearly the best basis to move forward. The Minister has brought forward compromise proposals in an attempt to create space alluded to in this mornings meeting.

"I would remind people though that the proposals brought forward by the Minister to the Executive in May and for which she is still seeking a legislative basis are compromise proposals, not Sinn Féin proposals

"There is still time to reach a consensus but we also need to bring an early conclusion to this debate and bring clarity to teachers, pupils and parents."
