“Health Minister's Position on Women and Children's Hospital Unacceptable”

10 November, 2008 - by Pat Sheehan

West Belfast MP Gerry Adams has said that the Minister for Health cannot abdicate his responsibility for the decision he has taken on delaying the new regional Women and Children's Hospital.

Mr. McGimpsey must now act on the cross-party support in the Assembly for a motion brought by Sinn Féin on the provision of the new Regional hospital for Women and Children.

Mr Adams said:

"The Minister's decision that work on this vital project will not begin until 2017 is totally unacceptable.

It flies in the face of the urgent health needs of women and children for this new hospital and the integrated services which would be located at the Royal.

This new regional hospital is already overdue.

The Minister accepted that there is "an urgent requirement" for this new hospital.

Indeed, the Minister conceded to the Assembly that the physical infrastructure is 'not fit for purpose'.

It is time for the Minister for Health to keep the promise which was made for a new hospital for women and children. It is time to deliver".
