Anderson hopeful for Greenhaw Lodge resolution

11 November, 2008 - by Maeve McLaughlin

There is renewed hope that the Greenhaw Lodge dispute could be resolved in the near future, Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has revealed.

Ms. Anderson commented:

"There has been a huge deal of concern in Derry regarding the Western Trust's plans to relocate Greenhaw Lodge - which provides daycare for adults with learning disabilities - to Gransha Park.

"The families see this as a retrograde step and they do not believe that an institutionalised environment will be conducive to the progress of their loved ones.

"Therefore, I raised this matter directly with the Minister and the Western Trust and tabled a motion calling on the Assembly to debate this proposal.

"I have now been informed that the decision to relocate has been deferred until after Christmas. That is a welcome reprieve for the families and I also understand that moves are ongoing behind-the-scenes to try and identify an alternative and suitable solution.

"It is quite clear that the proposal to move to Gransha is unacceptable and I will continue to lobby for this plan to be scrapped.

"We now have some valuable breathing space between now and Christmas and I am calling on the Trust to use that time constructively to identify a solution which is acceptable to all." CRÍOCH
