Sinn Féin pushes for Central Rathlin Island policy

13 November, 2008

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has praised the work done by Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy in establishing a central policy for Rathlin Island.

Mr McKay said

"Conor Murphy has been to the forefront in raising issues about Rathlin Island at a ministerial level and I would like to welcome his announcement that he intends to bring forward a draft policy for Rathlin Island which will cover a wide swathe of issues.

"To date the Minister has met the Islanders twice, introduced an enhanced ferry service and increased expenditure levels in order to improve the island's roads infrastructure. He also launched the new sub-sea electricity cable for the island.

"It is also important to learn of examples of good practice and governance in regard to other island communities in Ireland and the Minister is arranging a study visit to an offshore island in the south along with Minister Eamon Ó'Cuív which will bring together Rathlin islanders, Government officials and local islanders to share experiences and to help shape ideas for developing a comprehensive island policy.

"There is also a commitment from the Minister that £1/4 million will be spend on improving road surfaces on Rathlin by March 2011 and that he will continue to push for additional money for structural maintenance, further to the £200 million already secured which is very much to be welcomed." ENDS
