Government departments must appoint champions for social economy projects.
West Belfast Sinn Fein MLA and Vice-Chair of the Committee for Enterprise Trade & Investment called for Government Departments to identify and appoint a champion for social enterprise within each of their Departments.
Speaking today Ms McCann said:
"The growth and development of the Social Economy will only happen if Departments recognise the positive contribution they make to the economy and local communities.
"There are a number of opportunities for social economy enterprises to enter into business with the public sector. These opportunities exist in a wide range of the delivery of services, goods and building projects.
"By including social clauses in public procurement practices and specifications which can measure the social value of a project alongside its economic value, Government Departments can ensure that Social Economy Projects are not disadvantaged at any stage of the procurement process.
"Given the economic downturn and its effect on foreign direct investment it is essential that small and medium sized businesses and social economy enterprises are given the resources they need to sustain themselves in the short term and develop and grow in the longer term."
