Ferris calls for rejection of fishing cuts
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on fishing, Martin Ferris TD has called on the Irish Government to reject the latest cuts in the fishing quota proposed by the EU Commission. The cuts would mean that the North West whitefish sector will be closed with cuts of up to 25% in other species including a 15% reduction in the prawn quota. Deputy Ferris raised the issue under Dáil Standing Orders.
Deputy Ferris said: "If these cuts are accepted they will represent another significant step on the road to the destruction of the Irish fishing industry. The Irish Government must reject them at the December meeting of fishing Ministers but not alone that, they must represent the overwhelming anger within the sector at the manner in which the EU continues to treat the Irish fishing community.
"Decades of mismanagement under the Common Fisheries Policy have allowed the wholesale plundering of our waters by foreign fleet. That policy, based on a completely unjust distribution of quota, has failed this country and must be completely overhauled. This country must reclaim control over this valuable natural resource before it is completely destroyed by faceless bureaucrats." ENDS
