Attack on Community workers home will not stop sterling work - Kelly

17 November, 2008 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast Gerry Kelly has stated that those responsible for an attack on a local community workers home in the Newlodge area will not deter local workers from the sterling work that they are carrying out for the community.

Speaking today Mr Kelly said:

"Gerry O'Reilly is a highly respected community worker who works on an inter community basis and works closely with local youths across the community. I don't need to say that there is no justification for this attack whatsoever. Everybody locally knows Gerry and the sterling work he carries out.

"In all, those responsible, smashed fourteen windows in his home and his car windscreen at 4am this morning.

"This attack is not only an attack on Gerry and his family but an attack on the entire community using Gerry O'Reilly as a figurehead. This was carried out by a very small group who have been torturing the local community . They will not detract from the great work that is going on and community workers will not be distracted from giving their time over to help improve the lives of local people."
