Monaghan County Council to protest at Visit by Minister Sargent

17 November, 2008

The members of Monaghan County Council will this evening, Monday 17th November 2008, hold a protest over the ongoing removal of services at Monaghan General Hospital during the visit of Green Party Minister, Trevor Sergent, to the county.

The councillors will be joined by hospital campaigners from throughout the county. The protest will take place at 7.30pm outside the Shirley Arms hotel, Carrickmacross. Minister Sargent is due to address a Green Party meeting in the hotel at 8pm.

The Mayor of County Monaghan explained that Monaghan County Council last week sought a meeting with Minister Sargent to discuss the issue of Monaghan General Hospital today but this was refused. It was therefore agreed to mount the protest.

Trevor Sargent, while leader of the Green Party, had signed a pledge on behalf of his party stating categorically that they would not enter government unless all services at Monaghan General Hospital were restored and developed.
