Pro-selection spokesperson exposed making outdated and insulting comments

17 November, 2008 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Fein MLA Carál ní Chuilín has stated to day that Ken Bloomfield has exposed himself as living in the past with outdated and insulting views. This follows disparaging remarks with regards to the Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, Jackie McMullan and parents on the Shankill Road.

Speaking today Ms ní Chuilín said:

"The comments by Ken Bloomfield show his real thoughts, thoughts that are out of step with the vast majority of people and clearly outdated. For Ken Bloomfeild to make disparaging and bigoted remarks about both Jackie McMullan and Caitríona Ruane highlights a level of ignorance and contempt.

"On top of this to say that parents on the Shankill Road 'don't give a damn' about their children's education is just insulting. The Shankill Road is an area, like many others, that has been failed by a flawed education system which brandishes children at 11 failures. You only have to look at the statistics to realise this.

"Ken Bloomfield was a senior civil servant here for long enough. Maybe he would come and tell us what he did to ease the socio economic problems of working class districts in the north.

"If Ken Bloomfield has opinions on the selection process well and good. He is entitled to them but he should be conscious of airing them in a constructive and respectful manner without causing offence the way that he has."
