Sinn Féin MEPs Mary Lou McDonald and Bairbre de Brùn ask European Parliament to support to the campaign "Say No to Violence Against Women"
Launched by UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) this campaign is online at www.saynotoviolence.org and "invites people to add their names to a call to make ending violence against women a top priority worldwide." (UNIFEM). All signatures will be handed over by UNIFEM to the UN Secretary-General on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. To date 70,3462 people have signed it up among whom individuals, Government representatives and civil society organisations. The aim is to reach one million signatures by the time they are handed over.
Both MEPs have signed a written declaration in Strasbourg which backs the campaign and calls for the declaration of a "European Year of Zero Tolerance of Violence Against Women".
From the European Parliament in Strasbourg Ms de Brún stated:
"Violence Against women devastates lives, fractures communities and impedes development. Eliminating violence against women is a priority for Sinn Féin representatives in Ireland and so we are glad to be able to push this priority in the European Parliament today." ENDS
