Fishing cuts unacceptable
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fishing, South Down MLA Willie Clarke has said that the 25% cut in the Days at Sea for our fishermen imposed by the European Commission is totally unacceptable.
Mr Clarke said:
"This 25% cut in the days at sea in the cod recovery zone for our fishing industry is a slap in the face. The imposition of this cut by the European Commission is totally unacceptable.
"This will have a huge impact on the income of fishermen and the viability of our fishing industry here.
"Conor Murphy was pushing very hard to keep the cuts down to 15% but in the end all of the voting countries unanimously agreed to the 25% cut. Others were supporting the 15% line but unfortunately jumped ship over night.
"Many fishermen have reluctantly bought into restriction on the days at sea and fishing quotas to support the fishing stock recovery programme but this latest cut is a bad return for that support.
"This is another significant step on the road to the destruction of the Irish fishing industry. Decades of mismanagement under the Common Fisheries Policy have allowed the wholesale plundering of our waters by foreign fleet. That policy, based on a completely unjust distribution of quota and days at sea, has failed and must be completely overhauled." ENDS
