Altnagelvin staff to be commended for dealing with C-diff but Minister needs to do more.

20 November, 2008 - by Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin MLA and Health Committee member Sue Ramsey has commended staff at Altnagelvin for recognising the symptoms of C diff and acting accordingly with the proper procedure to deal with the bug. However Ms Ramsey has called on the Health Minister to review the approach to C -diff outbreaks across the north in order to end such outbreaks.

Speaking today Ms Ramsey said:

"I have to commend staff at Altnagelvin Hospital for identifying and dealing with the signs of a C-Diff outbreak. Their actions have invariably saved lives.

"However this is yet another outbreak of this deadly viruses within our hospitals. We have already seen the number of deaths linked to this super bug during the past year and a half reach over 60. More needs to be done to stop such outbreaks.

"I would call on the Minister to review the current approach to the c-diff outbreak across the North and put a greater degree of urgency into tackling this virus. The staff, patients and visitors of our hospitals deserve nothing less."
