Brendan Curran calls for Free Swimming for Kids

24 November, 2008

With child obesity on the increase, Sinn Féin's Brendan Curran has called for Newry & Mourne District Council to introduce free swimming for kids in order to tackle the problem.

Mr. Curran said,

"I have requested that the council fund free swimming from 3.30pm to 6.30pm Monday to Friday so that children can go swimming after school. With bad weather over the winter months it is too cold and wet for football and other outdoor games. Swimming is a great way to exercise indoors and is very popular among kids.

"I have suggested that the free swimming times be introduced for a three month period to allow it to be evaluated.

"Childhood obesity is a growing danger to children in our society. This project would cost very little to rate payers and is extremely beneficial for our kids." ENDS
