Sellafield should close, not transfer from public to private sector – Sinn Féin

24 November, 2008

Sinn Féin South Down MLA Willie Clarke has criticised moves to transfer the ownership of Sellafield Nuclear Plant to private ownership.

Mr Clarke said that the British Government should be focusing on listening to calls from both British and local Irish concerned groups calling for an end to nuclear activities at Sellafield.

He said,

"People are becoming increasingly concerned about the retention of the Sellafield facility and calling very clearly for something to be done to end the detrimental effect it is having on the environment, particularly the damage it is causing to Ireland's environment.

"The disposing of nuclear waste must cease and work started to halt this process immediately in order to protect future generations from the health and environmental implications associated with it.
The fact is that there are a number of clusters where there is an exceptionally high incidence's of Cancer in Louth, South Down and in the Lofoten region of Norway. Clearly there is a need to intensify the campaign to end all dangerous and deadly nuclear re-processing at Sellafield; not securing its future!" CRÍOCH
