Empey called to Assembly to answer questions on Calcast

25 November, 2008 - by Raymond McCartney

Sinn Féin Spokesperson, Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney MLA has today tabled a Priority Notice Question (PNQ) requiring the Employm, ent and Learning Minister, Reg Empey to appear before the Assembly to answer questions on the situation at the Calcast Plant in Derry.

Raymond McCartney said:

"In response to the announcement yesterday of almost 100 job losses at the Calcast Plant in Derry I tabled a PNQ this morning so that I can put some questions to the Minister regarding the manner in which this announcement was made, the situation regarding how the length of statutory notice given to the workers was manipulated in order to circumvent maximum requirements and what action the Minister intends to take to address these and other recent job losses in the Foyle constituency.

"Over recent years the textile and manufacturing sectors in Derry have been haemorrhaging jobs and this is another devastating blow to the North West economy given that Calcast was one of the few manufacturing plants left in the region. I intend to do all that I can to ensure that these workers receive every assistance and benefit to which they are entitled." ENDS
