25 November, 2008 - by Cathal Boylan

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Planning issues, Cathal Boylan MLA has welcomed the Ministerial statement today by Sammy Wilson on the Draft PPS 21 policy and particularly the commitment to consider the situation for Non Farming Rural Dwellers through the work of the Independent Working Group.

Cathal Boylan said:

"I welcome today's statement By Minister Sammy Wilson outlining the changes proposed that will provide more opportunities for planning approval for rural dwellers."

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson said however, that he was disappointed at those who fail to recognise the significance of these changes.

Mr Boylan said:

"I pressed the Minister to ensure that the Independent Working Group (IWG) will address the anomalies in the draft proposals affecting the section of the population described as the non-farming rural dwellers.

"I am pleased that the Minister confirmed that the work of the IWG was to provide recommendations aimed at creating a mechanism to enable those rural dwellers from the non-farming community will be able to obtain planning permission within their rural area.

"It is also to be welcomed that the composition of the IWG will be made up of individuals from different jurisdictions, i.e. North and South of Ireland as well as Britain. I believe that this will ensure the Group's independence." ENDS
