Ferris calls for extension of slurry spreading deadline
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD has once again called for the deadline for completing slurry spreading to be extended until December 31. The Kerry North TD pointed out that the Sinn Féin Minister for Agriculture in the northern Executive Michelle Gildernew had already done so for farmers in the Six Counties.
Speaking in the Dáil today Deputy Ferris said: "As I have said on previous occasions the poor weather conditions over the previous months have made it impossible for farmers to follow their normal routine. That is why it is essential that the deadline for the spreading of slurry be extended until the end of the year.
"The Minister has already conceded on the principle by extending the original deadline and must do so again. The fact that the northern authorities have already done so would indicate that concerns over the environmental impact have been addressed to their satisfaction and presumably the same conditions apply here."
