Ferris supports fishing sector’s opposition to cuts
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD has voiced his support for the Federation of Irish Fishermen who have called on the Irish Government to strenuously oppose the proposed cuts in the quota for the Irish fleet. The Kerry North TD was speaking at this morning's meeting of the Fisheries Committee which heard a presentation from the Federation and from the marine Institute.
Deputy Ferris said: "The cuts in quota proposed by the Commission would spell disaster for Irish fishermen. Not only must they be strenuously opposed at the Council meeting in December but the Irish Government must also insist, at a minimum, that the Hague Preferences which are supposed to give the Irish fleet additional quota are put on a statutory basis rather than being subject as now to annual negotiation.
"I would also concur with the Federation with regard to the shortcomings of the decommissioning scheme and the overall manner in which the fishing sector is being 'policed', particularly with regard to the heavy handed approach being taken towards Irish fishermen, both in terms of the current legislation and the way in which the protection authorities operate."
