O’Dowd calls for speedy re-opening of Portadown Primary School

1 December, 2008 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson John O'Dowd has called for a speedy reopening of Presentation Primary School in Thomas Street, Portadown, following a suspicious fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Upper Bann MLA said,

"This school is an outstanding example of what can be achieved by committed, dedicated teaching staff. Just a few years ago it was on the verge of closing because of falling numbers, now it is a prestigious school serving a multi ethnic community. It offers an essential service to children of many nationalities and all the stops should be pulled to ensure it is reopened without any unnecessary delay."

Cllr O'Dowd MLA continued:

"There have been reports that the blaze was malicious and we await a full report from the Fire Service to see if this is the case. Should it turn out to be arson, the public owe it to our children to come forward with any information they may have.

"A good and all encompassing education, as supplied by Presentation Primary School, is not alone a fundamental right, it is the base on which our social and economic future is built and no-one has the right to prevent even one child from fully participating in that education." ENDS
