Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA and Policing Board member Daithí McKay has welcomed the resolution to the funding shortfall facing policing in the current financial year.
Speaking after meeting with British NIO Minister Paul Goggins Mr McKay said:
"It was absolutely imperative that the proposed cuts to community policing and social change within policing were not affected by budget cuts. As a result of negotiations between the Policing Board and the NIO we have now come up with a solution that does not adversely affect those key areas.
"There are obviously a number of challenges ahead in the new year as the devolution of policing and justice is rolled out and it is important that the new Justice Department and the Policing Board gets to grip with how to deal with 'legacy' issues such as Hearing Loss claims from former police officers.
"Sinn Féin will not stand over a dilution in civic policing nor will we back cuts that will set back the change which is currently taking place within policing here in the north. It is important that this change continues within a new Justice dispensation and that it is not sacrificed due to budgetary pressures." ENDS
