De Brún to vote against EU- Israel Association Agreement

3 December, 2008 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún has stated that she will be voting against the EU- Israel Association Agreement proposal which will be placed in front of the European Parliament tomorrow. The agreement would see the strengthening of ties between Israel and the EU despite Israel's denial of basic human rights to the Palestinian people.

Speaking today Ms de Brún said:

"The proposed EU Israel Association Agreement will see the strengthening of the EU's relationship with Israel in areas including economic, trade, security and diplomatic relations.

"This is despite the Israel being in blatant contravention of the existing preferential trade agreement which stipulates that Israel must respect human rights or else the agreement would be suspended.

"The EU have failed to suspend the existing trade agreement. On the contrary, by bringing forward this proposed new agreement, the EU sends a very clear message that sanctions will not be imposed on Israel despite the daily abuse of human rights such as the denial of aid for Gaza, the building of the Apartheid wall and the current ongoing settlements in the West Bank.

"I would urge MEPs to vote against the new Agreement proposal and to push for the suspension of the current preferential trade agreement until Israel can visibly demonstrate to the world that it is taking its obligations on the delivery of human rights seriously."
