“We must receive an effective policy from the Culture Minister” – McElduff
Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has today called for an 'effective policy' from Gregory Campbell in relation to the Irish Language and a language strategy for the Six Counties.
Mr McElduff was speaking ahead of the Culture Minister Gregory Campbell bringing forward a discussion paper to the DCAL Committee tomorrow relating to his proposed strategy.
"It is the case that we need an effective rights based Irish Language Act here in the Six Counties, but what we are seeing now is Gregory Campbell retreating from the lesser position adopted by his predecessor in relation to implementing a 'language strategy'. This simply is not good enough and as Chair of the DCAL committee I will be relentless in finding out why the Minister is not living up to his responsibilities as a Minister for all of our people.
"The Assembly and Executive are obliged to promote and protect the Irish language; this shouldn't be dependant on the development of status of any other. Gregory Campbell must realise he needs to adopt a strategy to deal with the ever-growing Irish speaking community in the North of Ireland.
"I have no doubt that the Sinn Féin members on the committee we be lobbying hard to find out why the Minister is yet to live up to his responsibilities and implement an effective rights based Acht na Gaeilge." CRÍOCH
