East Wall murder an outrageous crime against the community
Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke has described the murder of a man in East Wall last night as an "outrageous crime against the community." While expressing his sympathy to the family of Aidan Kane Cllr. Burke went on to say that local residents had been crying out for action in recent months as the area slid further out of control.
Cllr Burke said, "The murder of Aidan Kane last night is an outrageous crime against the community of East Wall. I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound sympathy with his family on their tragic loss -- especially as we approach Christmas time.
"For months now residents in East Wall have been crying out for action to be taken and plans to be put in place to bring a halt to the increased levels of anti-social and violent behaviour perpetrated by a tiny minority.
"As chairperson of the Councils Joint Policing Committee I recently had residents in meeting with senior Garda management to express their concerns that the area was sliding out of control. Over 200 people attended a meeting in Church Road to express their fears and anger over the failure of the authorities to deal with the issues.
"It is unacceptable that we should have to wait for such a violent and tragic response from a group of thugs before the authorities sit up and take notice. People on the street will tell you that youngsters in the area are regularly carrying guns with them. We cannot allow such a situation to continue. We need action.
"We needed and still need increased Garda patrols in the area. We need to see the strategic use of CCTV -- especially in flashpoint areas. We need a robust response to these thugs so that ordinary decent people can live their lives in peace and without fear." ENDS
