Sinn Féin to meet Electoral Office over registration concerns

9 December, 2008

Sinn Féin Vice President Pat Doherty MP MLA will meet the Electoral Office and its' Chief Executive Douglas Bain tomorrow, Wednesday 10th December 2008, at 10.30am to raise concerns about barriers that are stopping people coming onto the live electoral register.

Sinn Féin will also meet with the Electoral Commission at 12 noon.

Speaking ahead of the meetings Mr Doherty said:

"There are serious concerns that the Electoral Office is not doing all it can or should be doing to ensure that everyone who is entitled to vote is on the live register.

"There are some serious problems in relation to rolling registration and particularly people who have moved home or fallen off the register.

"The reality is that British legislation removing the household registration option decimated the Electoral register over the last number of years.

"There are concerns that despite some good work that the Electoral Office is still not doing enough to facilitate people getting back on the register." ENDS
