Sinn Féin praises 'courage' of Equality Authority chief
Sinn Féin Equality and Human Rights Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has branded as "disgraceful" the government's slashing of the Equality Authority's budget, that has basically forced the Equality Authority's chief Executive Niall Crowley to resign today.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "Regretfully it seems as if the government is not willing to back down from its dastardly cuts to the Equality Authority and it has led Niall Crowley its chief Executive to show the courage of his convictions, I praise him for this. That is not an easy decision for anyone to take.
"Those cuts have basically meant that the Equality Authority cannot carry on its work effectively and has rendered it impotent, something which Mr. Crowley obviously was not going to preside over.
"When taken with the cuts to the Human Rights Commission's budget, these cuts can only be seen as an assault on the human rights architecture which Ireland was justly proud of untill now and which has drawn praise from the UN.
"The cuts need to be reversed, and the Equality Authority and the Human Rights Commission need to be enhanced to face the challenging times ahead, times when their expertise and intervention will be called on more than ever. Human rights and equality have always come under attack in times of recession when they are needed most." ENDS
