Joint meeting of Agricultural Ministers welcomed

12 December, 2008

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture Pat Doherty MP has welcomed today's meeting between the island's Agricultural Ministers Michelle Gildernew and Brendan Smith dealing with the issues arising from the contaminated animal feed problem.

Mr Doherty said:

"There is no doubt that the past number of days have been a difficult one for everyone involved in agriculture on the island, particularly those involved in the pig sector. A swift review of all of that is now underway.

"In the meantime it is vital that we get the message across to consumers that Irish produce is safe and the Irish agriculture is open for business.

"Today's meeting between the island's agricultural Ministers will on one hand enable them to review what was happened in the course of the past week and more importantly set out in very clear terms exactly how the industry will move forward from here." ENDS
