Fall in energy prices welcome

12 December, 2008 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and vice chair of the Assembly Committee for Enterprise Trade & Investment Jennifer McCann has welcomed the news that gas prices and electricity prices are set to come down.

She said,

"I welcome the news that prices in gas and electricity are set to come down. We saw a 52 per cent rise in electricity prices over the past year and gas going up by almost a third.

"Wholesale gas and oil prices were given as the reason for the massive price hikes and recently those wholesale prices have come down.

"Sinn Féin have met with Phoenix Gas, NIE Energy and the Utility Regulator on a regular basis over recent months where we pushed for the need for prices to come down.

"I hope the decrease in prices expected to be announced next week will reflect the fall in wholesale prices, and the difficulties people are facing paying for gas and electricity." ENDS
