Wilson can’t run from responsibilities

14 December, 2008 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún responding to personal attacks from the Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has said that the minister cannot keep running away from his responsibility to provide leadership on the environment.

Ms de Brún said:

"While there is nothing surprising in the childish nature of Sammy Wilson's personal attacks on those who believe that climate change is an important issue, he will at some point have to recognise that he still has to deliver on tough targets. At local, European and international level there is a clear responsibility for action to meet the challenges presented by climate change and our dependency on fossil fuels.

"If every region across the world refused to accept this responsibility then there would be no progress. Thankfully very few leaders expose themselves in quite the same way as Sammy Wilson but the approach being adopted by the minister will cause huge damage locally.

"We ignore the issues of fuel security, fuel poverty and fuel cost at our peril. Across the world I believe that political leaders are up for progress and recognise the potential in developing alternatives to fossil fuel and in the green economy. We cannot allow Sammy Wilson to leave us out in the cold.

"This week the European Parliament will vote on a range of measures in the climate and energy package that, whether Sammy likes it or not, will have implications for Executive policy and decision making here. Failure to meet new EU targets will have a direct consequence for everyone living in this part of Ireland." ENDS
