Ó Snodaigh welcomes Dublin heroin seizure
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed last night's seizure of 30kg of heroin with an estimated value of €6million at Dublin port. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the recent increase in heroin seizures has coincided with an upsurge in people seeking help for heroin addiction. He said the heroin seized must be checked for contamination as part of the investigation into the recent outbreak of botulism.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "I welcome last night's seizure of a very significant amount of heroin with an estimated value of €6million and I congratulate those officers involved in the operation. I am, however, extremely concerned at the recent spike in heroin seizures over the past number of months. This has matched increased demand and an upsurge in people seeking help for heroin addiction. This shows that the state could be facing a renewed heroin epidemic and urgent action is required.
"The heroin seized in last night's operation and all heroin seized must be checked for contamination as part of the investigation into the recent outbreak of botulism which has already taken the life of one drug addict. An effort must be made to find any contaminated heroin currently on the streets. If this batch is contaminated it is conceivable that the original contaminated batch came from the same suppliers and is destined for the same Irish drug dealers who handled the original batch." ENDS
