Community will welcome final step in Divis tower transformation.

20 January, 2009 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Fein MLA for West Belfast Fra McCann has said that the final opening of apartments on the top two floors of Divis Tower will be seen as a significant move by local people.

Speaking today Mr McCann said:

"The opening of the apartments of the 18th and 19th floor of Divis tower will be seen by residents of West Belfast as a significant final step in turning the British Army's spy post back into usable living space for local people.

"The top two floors were commandeered by the British army despite strong protests from the community and were transformed into a spy post, watching all that came in and out of West Belfast, with countless cameras and observation equipment.

"Despite this, countless attacks were carried out by loyalists under the watch of this post, leading to many assertions of collusion and the question being raised as to why exactly it was there.

"In essence local people will see removal and the final conversion of the top two floors, with the addition of a roof garden as very welcome."
