Ferris calls for rejection of Fish Quota cuts
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries Martin Ferris TD has reiterated his call for Fisheries Minister Tony Killeen to resolutely oppose all proposals to cut the quota allocated to Irish fishermen in 2009. The Kerry North TD was speaking as Fisheries Ministers met in Brussels to consider proposals to severely cut the quota next year and to close the north west white fishery.
Deputy Ferris said: "The Minister must ensure that the proposed cuts are rejected and that the Hague Preferences are given a statutory basis so that even the current unfair share given to this country is not subject to annual attack. The measures being proposed if accepted would sound the death knell for another substantial section of the Irish fishery sector. A further indication, if needed, that the real object of EU policy is to close down the Irish fishery." ENDS
