Brolly 'saddened' at news of Coleraine job losses
Sinn Féin MLA Francie Brolly has said that he is 'saddened' to hear of the latest job losses at AVX in Coleraine, 'particularly at this time of year'.
Mr Brolly said,
"This news will no doubt come as a blow to those employees at this particular plant; it comes towards the end of a week that has taken its toll on workers across the Six Counties. While it will be most immediately felt by the workers and their families it is another financial blow to the economy of the North West Region. Added to the already massive job losses recently in Seagate and Calcast this will exacerbate the effects of the global financial downturn on the local economy.
"I will be writing to the DETI Minister Arlene Foster demanding a job creation taskforce for this Region.
"I want to send solidarity to those workers who have received redundancy notices and call on AVX to honour its responsibilities to the community by meeting with the workers affected in order to put in place programmes to assist the employees to access retraining, upskilling and job procurement.
"I am deeply concerned at the growing trend of companies announcing redundancies in tranches of less than one hundred in order to avoid the requirement of issuing a minimum of three months notice to employees. This is unacceptable and I would urge the Minister to review this loophole that is detrimental to workers rights. It is of vital importance that workers receive adequate notice of redundancies. This three month requirement should not be numerically determined; it should be universally applicable to all redundancies."
