Maskey welcomes Primrose Hill traffic light switch on

19 December, 2008 - by Alex Maskey

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the fact that new traffic light at the Primrose Hill/Saintfield Road junction, this week, became fully functional.

The South Belfast MLA said,
"Sinn Féin had long lobbied for traffic lights to be situated at this junction and we warmly welcomed the fact that as an original condition of granting planning permission for the further development of this area by 'Taggart Homes', they had to commit to installing traffic signals at this junction.

"Subsequently, however, 'Taggart Homes' went into administration and the traffic lights at this junction had remained in place but were not functioning. This was a highly dangerous situation. We had raised this issue with all of the relevant agencies and directly with the Minister Conor Murphy MP".

He concluded,
"I would welcome, then, the fact that these traffic lights became fully functional this week. This issue had dragged on for far too long, and posed a very real danger to both motorists and pedestrians in this area. I am extremely pleased that the Roads Service moved swiftly to deal with this issue after 'Taggart Homes' went into administration".
