300 jobs threatened by u-turn on Housing work
Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Francie Molloy has said that up to 300 jobs are at risk by the decision of Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie to halt work on kitchen refurbishments in Housing Executive properties across the north.
Mr Molloy said:
"I have been contacted by local contractors concerned at the potential job losses resulting from Margaret Ritchie's decision to stop kitchen refurbishments to Housing Executive properties across the north. This will impact not just on the contractors but also suppliers and manufacturers.
"This appears to be a totally arbitrary decision that will have far reaching consequences.
"We continually hear from the Minister that she wants to help those most in need yet at the same time she is now putting hundreds of jobs directly at risk. It will also affect those who are looking for work done in their homes, people who in many cases are living in substandard conditions.
"I expect that yet again we will hear further excuses from the Minister but at some point she actually has to start delivering. Stopping this programme of works totally out of the blue like this will be devastating for local contractors in the run up to Christmas." ENDS
