McKay shocked at river pollution figures

24 December, 2008

Sinn Féin's North Antrim MLA and the party's environmental spokesperson Daithí McKay has expressed his 'shock and sadness' at figures released highlighting the degree of river pollution across the North.

Speaking today Mr McKay said,

"These figures indicate very clearly a cause for concern.

"The Assembly and the Minister for the Environment must work to ensure that our rivers meet the highest European standard in relation to pollutant levels.

"Ireland is world renowned for its natural environmental beauty, which attracts thousands of tourists each year. The levels of pollution as highlighted within these figures are a shocking indication of how little respect is being shown. Government must realise that this can have a detrimental effect on our economy as well as on our environment and wildlife.

"The DOE must ensure rigorous checks and actively work to reduce the levels of pollutants within our rivers; it must also ensure that it is implementing necessary education programmes and practical steps that reduce these high levels."
