As cold weather continues, we should look out for our older people – Sinn Fein

5 January, 2009 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson for older people, Micky Brady has said that, as the cold snap continues this week, people should consider calling to their elderly neighbours and relatives.

Speaking today Mr Brady said,

"Before the Christmas holidays Sinn Féin made a call for people to call and check on elderly and vulnerable people during that time. That shouldn't be a tokenistic gesture, the holidays are over and we are back to normal but that doesn't mean we should forget about those same people.

"The cold weather is a burden on many vulnerable pensioners, not to mention the increase in cold and flu over the past number of weeks. I would call on people to remember their elderly neighbours and visit them to see how they are doing. You may be able to offer them practical help and assistance that they will be very appreciated of, but more often than not the simple acknowledgement goes a very long way.

"Taking time out to call with an elderly relative or neighbour and enquiring if they need any assistance could make a world of difference to the individual and personally fulfilling." CRÍOCH
