Sinn Féin welcomes UUP’s concerns over British government demilitarisation finance plans.
Sinn Féin MP MLA for Fermanagh South Tyrone, Michelle Gildernew, has welcomed the UUP's, Tom Elliot's concerns surrounding the British governments plan to sell off British Army bases in the north to fund wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Speaking today Ms Gildernew said:
"Sinn Féin have raised the issue of finances from the sale of British army bases going to the British exchequer and not the Executive as far back as September 2008 when, according to Paul Goggins, the monies raised from the sales will go to the British military in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is good to see the UUP are now thinking along the same lines.
"Sinn Féin have been on record stating that the sale of any of these site should result in the monies raised going to the Executive for Executive projects.
"The sites in the north were occupied by the British army and caused suffering for the communities in which they were based. Now the monies raised will exacerbate the suffering of the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We now need to see a strong all party position placed in front of the British government demanding that this money is returned into local hands for the benefit of local people." CRIOCH
