Measures need to be taken to prevent heroin epidemic – Ó Snodaigh
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed last night's seizure of €100,000 worth of heroin in Benburb Street in Dublin. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the continued increase in seizures of high class drugs shows highlights the need for extra resources for the Garda Drug Squads.
He said, "I welcome last night's seizure on Benburb Street and congratulate those officers involved in the operation. However, the increases in drug seizures over the past year, as highlighted in today's Irish Times, is evidence that there is increased demand for drugs and a need for extra resources for the Gardaí.
"I am particularly concerned at the spike in heroin seizures during the past year. This has been matched by an increase in people seeking help for heroin addiction and shows that the state could be facing another heroin epidemic.
"It is hugely important that the Government takes measures to prevent this scenario from evolving including increased resources for the Garda Drug Squads and revenue for those working at the coalface to help people to come off drugs." ENDS
