Hoax Mountain Rescue call condemned – Sinn Féin

6 January, 2009

Sinn Féin south Down MLA Willie Clarke has condemned those responsible for issuing a hoax rescue call on the Mourne Mountains yesterday.

Speaking today Mr Clarke said,

"Yesterdays news caused a great deal of concern, stress and panic for local people who were deeply worried about the safety of the man who called in claiming he was lost on the Mountain.

"Ultimately it appears now that it was a hoax call and I must question the motivation of those responsible to bring people out in such cold weather to have to search for someone who ultimately, wasn't there.

"Yesterday people promptly went into action and I commend all of them for the sterling work they carry out. The cost involved in yesterdays search is more than monetary, people who are prepared to go out in search of another person they feel is in danger will be deeply hurt and sore at those who carried out this absolutely unnecessary hoax."
