Call for Europe to investigate Mullaghglass landfill January 2009

6 January, 2009

Sinn Fein MLA Paul Butler has called for Europe to investigate the running of Mullaghglass landfill site which is located on the outskirts of West Belfast. The calls for an investigation come after the Environment Minister Sammy Wilson, in response to an Assembly question, said that his department had received over 200 complaints about the landfill site.

Paul Butler said

''In the time ahead I will be asking Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún to raise this matter in the European Parliament and for officials to carry out an investigation under European legislation governing landfill sites.''

Paul Butler continued

'The Environment and Heritage Service closed this landfill site in 2007 because of concerns about an infestation of flies at the site. I am concerned about the impact this landfill is having on the local community.

''Arlene Foster when she was Minister of the Environment carried out an investigation into the fly infestation and other problems associated with the site in relation to odour and litter, but it is clear that there are problems in the way this landfill is being run when over 200 complaints have been made to the Department of the Environment.''
