EU pesticides package may undermine farming industry
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has expressed concern that aspects of the EU 'pesticides package' may lead to serious problems for farmers and growers in the North.
Speaking after the vote in the European Parliament today Ms de Brún said that while no one doubts the need to use pesticides responsibly, or to protect the environment and human health, that regulation need not be taken to a point where there was a risk that farmers could no longer produce.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg the 6 County MEP said:
"I have been approached by a wide range of stakeholders who have outlined real anxiety about the impact that parts of the new regulation may have on crop yield at home. I believe those concerns are real and founded on the reality of farming here in our damp climate. We must of course use pesticides responsibly, and we must protect the environment and human health. However regulation does not need to be taken to a point beyond that where growers and farmers can no longer produce." ENDS
