Sustainable schools – sustainable communities

13 January, 2009 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd has said that the sustainable schools policy should be used to create sustainable schools as part of sustainable rural communities.

Speaking following a debate in the Assembly Chamber Mr O'Dowd said,

"Commentators have said that 'alarm bells will ring' if schools fall below the policy criteria. I would argue what is important is what you do when the alarm goes off; you can either ignore it, or act.

"A lot of the time concerns about schools sustainability are only highlighted when numbers have declined over a period of years to a position whereby the school is unable to survive. This document will allow for earlier action and consideration to help inform and empower local communities in relation to their educational needs." CRÍOCH
