de Brún calls for action rather than words from the EU over Gaza situation

14 January, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Participating in the European Parliament debate on the urgent situation in Gaza, Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has roundly condemned Israeli aggression in Gaza and called for the European Union to take strong action.

Speaking in the European Parliament Ms de Brún said

"I wish to add my voice to those condemning the aggression we have seen perpetrated by Israel in Gaza recently and to send my solidarity and that of my party to those suffering most in the civilian, residential areas being targeted by these attacks. Even before the latest escalation in Israeli violence we have seen for months a collective punishment of the Palestinian people in Gaza. Over 50% of Gazans don't know where their next meal will come from, and hospitals are reporting massive shortages of supplies"

Ms de Brún concluded by calling for practical diplomatic action to be taken by the EU to pressure Israel to cease its savage assault:

"The European Union must raise its voice against the unacceptable Israeli actions. We have some tools at our disposal that we can use to get our point across. The idea of upgrading EU-Israel relations should be abandoned and the agreements currently in force should be suspended until Israel meets its obligations under international law." ENDS
