Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams announces An Chéad Dáil Éireann 90ú Cuimhneachán January 21st Mansion House events
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MLA, MP today announced to the media details of Sinn Féin’s celebrations events to be held on January 21st in the historic Round Room in the Mansion House to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the first Dáil. Mr Adams also spoke about his attendance at next week’s inauguration in Washington for President elect Barak Obama.
Mr Adams said:
“Next week marks the 90th anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the first Dáil. To celebrate the anniversary Sinn Féin will be hosting a number of events in the historic Round Room in the Mansion House.
“A significant amount of preparation has been put in place for the event which will focus on the campaign for Irish Unity and on the continuing relevance of the Democratic Programme of 1919 the core principles of which were Liberty, Equality and Justice for all.
“The historic Round Room is the venue for the event which begins at in the afternoon of January 21st. A photographic exhibition will be on display which will be accompanied by an be historical walking tour of the Mansion House and the surrounding streets. A commemorative publication issued by the Sinn Féin members of the Oireachtas, including reproductions of the documents adopted by the Dáil on 21 January, will be launched.
“All of these documents will be sent out to primary schools throughout the country in an ‘An Chéad Dáil Éireann’ commemoration pack.
“That evening there will be a presentation recalling key events of the First Dáil period. Mary Lou McDonald MEP will host the evening’s proceedings which will commence with a presentation to Jack O’Connor, President of SIPTU, marking the centenary this month of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union.
“The 1918 General Election was the first in which Irish women had the vote and the only woman elected in Ireland and Britain was Constance Markievicz for Sinn Féin. She became Minister for Labour in the First Dáil, one of the first women Government ministers in the world. To emphasise the role of women in the struggle special presentations will be made to women elected representatives of Sinn Féin.
“The keynote speaker on 21 January will be Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams who will outline the need to re-focus on Irish reunification and the continuing relevance of the First Dáil’s Democratic Programme, especially in an economic climate where rights and living standards are under attack.
“Speaking about his attendance at next week’s inauguration in Washington for President elect Barak Obama Mr Adams commended the incoming President for his commitment to continuing US support for the Irish peace process adding:
“Sinn Féin is committed to working with Irish America toward building on the positive relationship we have with both Democrats and Republicans and with the new administration in Washington. The coming into office of the Obama administration will present any positive opportunities and challenges. The incoming President has already acknowledged the need for immigration reform, an issue that remains central to the many thousands of Irish Diaspora in the US and their families here in Ireland.” ENDS
